Vinyl Storage Bag

I'd been looking for an excuse to experiment with clear vinyl, so one of my cousins gave me an excuse: toy storage.

Materials

Bottom: Cotton Duck 15" x 10" (1)
Vinyl: 15" x 8" (2)
Top: 15" x 6.5" (2)

Also need cording for the drawstring and scotch tape.

Tips

Use a wet erase marker to mark the vinyl. This made it easy to see & cut. Just be sure to wipe down your cutting edge and the vinyl really good with a paper towel so you don't wind up with marker all over your hands!

Put scotch tape on the bottom of your presser foot and the plate (don't cover up the feed dogs and be sure you leave plenty of unobstructed room on the foot for the thread). This helps the vinyl not stick when sewing.

Top Assembly

I marked lines on both top assemblies as shown. 1/2" on each short side (to create a small 1/4" hem), 1" on both long sides, and 3.5" on one long side (this will create the drawstring channel).

Stitch the side hems, then fold and press to the lines marked. At the top (the drawstring channel), stitch at 1/8" from the edge to close the channel. Set aside.

Attach Bottom to Vinyl

Take your bottom piece and mark a 1" line on both long ends. Fold to the line to create a hem and press with an iron.

Unfold and line it up with a piece of vinyl (right sides together) and stitch to secure it.

Then, fold the bottom back over on the crease you ironed and topstitch 2 rows.

Repeat for the other piece of vinyl on the other side of the bottom and set aside.

Attach Top to Vinyl

Using the same process as for the bottom to vinyl, grab a piece of the top and locate the bottom end that only has the 1/2" hem (not the drawstring channel). Unfold and align with the vinyl right sides together. Stitch to secure, then fold the top piece back on the create and stitch 2 rows to secure.

Repeat for other top piece on the other end of the vinyl.

Sew Bag Together

Fold the bag right sides together and stitch closed at 1/4". Sew only up to the bottom of the drawstring channel. You want that channel open for the drawstrings.

I made a 5" boxed corner.

Turn right side out - and fair warning, vinyl is kind of a bitch to work with. It sticks to itself. Not easy to turn this one out!

Get your drawstring and feed it through the channel (use a safety pin). I might add another drawstring to make it a 2-way pull, but for now this will do.

Stuff it with whatever.
