It's Been a Year!

A year ago today, I started this blog. I only know that because Facebook reminded me. How did we survive before the Internet and social media?

If you told me a year ago I'd now be banging out clothing like it's nobody's business, I'd have been skeptical. I probably would have said yeah right.

And here we are.
I started off with bags, adding zippers and hardware. Big bags, little bags, medium bags, wallets, drawstring backpacks. Then, I reupholstered a chair. Never again.

Spring came along and I turned my focus outdoors. I made cinder block benches for my front porch and patio, complete with custom cushions. I got a free fiberglass fire pit and tried my hand at Bondo (another never again) and converted it into a water garden with a fountain.

Summer happened. All was quiet on the sewing front until I had some trouble with something I was trying to order at Sailrite.com and that wound up turning into me being interviewed and featured on their blog! I was fam-ish for a hot minute and that was fun!

I got a serger for my birthday.

Summer led to my best friend's wedding the end of August, and I made wristlets for all the bridesmaids and even altered my bridesmaid dress. It held, and that's all that mattered!

The bridesmaid dress was a gateway drug. After the strapless dress stayed on for the entire day, complete with me dancing like a damn fool, I figured I could try some more since I now had a serger that I was terrified to thread.

I made flannel pajama pants. I made a skirt. A tank top. A dress. All without patterns.

Then it was time to get my sewing operation off of my kitchen table. I converted my spare bedroom into a sewing room. Aside from my office, I now spend more time in this room than any other room in my house!

I discovered patterns.  Another dress. A skirt with an invisible zipper. A sweatshirt. A fleece jacket. A layering shirt. A diaper bag.

A bunch of stuff for Christmas that hasn't been revealed yet...

I made a lot of shit this year!

With each project I learned something new. I hacked patterns. Tried something new. Failed. Tried again. Ripped out countless seams. Started over. And you know what? I had fun.

If you're reading this and you think you can't, think again. You can. Anyone can do this. For me, sewing has had an incredible impact on my work/life balance (as in it is now balanced). I enjoy the creativity and the problem solving associated with everything I create.

What will 2017 bring? Who knows...but I'm in for the ride. Thanks for reading! Please comment and let me know what you think!
